Get Kids Active
Kids that are physically active are happier and healthier. When our children have the opportunity to have access to physical active programs they are provided with alternatives to sedentary lifestyles, exposed to activities that will improve their health, and learn healthy habits that will last them a lifetime. On this page you will find resources and programs to help Get Kids Active!
Youth Violence Prevention
Although violence affects all of our communities, Alameda County youth are disproportionately affected by this violence. Last year, Alameda County ranked second in youth homicide in the state. In addition, according to the Alameda County Public Health Department, Hayward Unified School District reports a 17% dropout rate for high school students, and the vast majority of all school suspensions are reported to be violence or drug-related.
Children's Memorial Project
Each year, hundreds of children around the country die by violence. In the past decade in Alameda County, more than 230 children under the age of 18 have died by violence. At the last Board of Supervisors meeting of each month, Supervisor Lockyer presents a remembrance of the children who've died, and the County lowers its flags to half-staff on the following Friday to honor them and heighten awareness of the tragedy of these lost children.
