Sustainable Communities Strategy
California Senate Bill 375 established the goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through development of the Sustainable Communities Strategy (SCS), which integrates transportation and land-use planning. The law calls for metropolitan planning organizations in 18 regions to develop an integrated transportation, land-use, and housing plan with the ultimate goal of reducing GHG emissions from cars and light-duty trucks. Agencies involved in developing the SCS include the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the Association of Bay Area Governments in partnership with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission.
The implementation of these policies will have far-reaching effects on local and regional land-use planning. It's critical that policymakers and stakeholders have practical knowledge of these policies that will fundamentally change the way we plan for future development. The District Two office hosted a workshop for elected officials and stakeholders to learn about this process, and we will continue to work collaboratively to enact sound policies for Alameda County residents. The participating agencies distributed and presented many useful materials during the SCS development. Below, you can download the presentations that the various regional agencies presented at the workshop on March 19 and summit on May 14, 2011.
