Information for Older Adults Raising Children

More than six million children in the United States are living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. According to U.S. Census 2000 data, 2.4 million grandparents are taking on primary responsibility for their grandchildren's basic needs.
The AARP Foundation has launched a new customized version of NCOA's BenefitsCheckUp developed specifically to reach out to grandparents raising grandchildren, parents aged 50 and over who are seeking benefits to support their children, and adult children looking to help aging parents.
Called Benefits QuickLINK, the free site screens for up to 15 of the most important state and federal public benefits programs for older Americans and families with children. Examples include Medicaid for children, Supplemental Security Income for children, TANF-Child Only, and State Children's Health Insurance Programs, as well as hundreds of free and low-cost medication programs.
